This is done by the service providers to protect their own business. In another scenario, the user may grow dissatisfied with the quality of the service and/ or the rates of the service provider. But in order to change the service provider he/ she has to give up the phone.

Several GSM phones are dedicatedly built for specific service providers. Some phones can be unlocked by feeding into them a secret code. This code is usually unique to the phone and based upon its IMEI number and the service provider that locked it. Some phones are programmed to work only with a certain service provider. In such cases the phone's operating system software needs to be reprogrammed to unlock it. The easiest way out is to go and buy an unlocked phone!
